Prompt Content

Create a character who begins as [starting trait] but gradually transforms into [ending trait] due to [pivotal experience]. Include the following elements in their development arc:

  1. An internal conflict between [value A] and [value B]
  2. A behavioral pattern that changes from [old behavior] to [new behavior]
  3. A relationship that evolves from [starting dynamic] to [ending dynamic]
  4. A core belief that is challenged by [specific event or realization]
  5. A moment of crisis that forces them to choose between [option A] and [option B]

For each stage of their development, include:

  • How they perceive themselves
  • How others perceive them
  • Their primary motivations and fears
  • Physical or visual cues that reflect their internal state

Ensure the character's transformation feels organic and earned, with clear cause-and-effect relationships between experiences and changes. The character should maintain a consistent core identity despite their transformation, with their growth emerging from existing traits rather than appearing randomly.

End with a brief analysis of the thematic significance of this character arc and how it might resonate with readers/audiences.

This prompt completely transformed my character development process. The structured approach to internal conflicts and behavioral changes helped me create the most nuanced protagonist I've ever written. My writing group was amazed at how organic the character's growth felt throughout the story.

I've tried many character development frameworks, but this one stands out because it emphasizes the connection between external events and internal changes. The prompt's structure forces you to think deeply about cause-and-effect in character growth, which is something many writers (myself included) often struggle with. I've now used this for three different characters in my novel, and each one feels distinct yet equally well-developed.

Great framework overall, and I've recommended it to several colleagues who teach creative writing. My only suggestion would be to add something about how a character's transformation might affect their dialogue patterns or speaking style, as that's often overlooked but can be a powerful way to show character growth. Otherwise, this prompt hits all the important points and produces remarkably three-dimensional characters.

Would this framework work well for side characters too, or is it better suited for protagonists?

Great question! While I designed this primarily with protagonists in mind, you can absolutely adapt it for important side characters. For minor characters, it might be overkill, but for any secondary character with a significant arc, this framework can add depth. You might want to focus on fewer elements (perhaps just 2-3 from the list) to keep the development more streamlined.

I've been using this framework for a character in my sci-fi novel, and it's helped tremendously. One addition I made was to consider how the character's relationship with technology evolves alongside their personal growth, which worked really well for my setting. Would love to see a sci-fi specific version of this prompt!
